The Centre Pompidou was in the 70s what the Eiffel Tower was in 1889: an abomination. People were highly displeased with the exoskeleton of a building, with its multi colored tubes and futuristic feel. But George Pompidou, former president of France, wanted a modern art museum, and this is what was built in 1977.
The main attractions of the center are the National Museum of Modern Art (Musée National d’Art Moderne), which houses a large collection of 20th and some 21st century art. There is also a public library that is free to anyone, the Center for Industrial Design, the Institute for Research and Coordination of Acoustics and Music, which furthers the cause of contemporary and traditional music. If you’re short on time or don’t want to squeeze in another museum, the Pompidou Center is not a definite must, but if you like modern art this is the place to be.
