This arch, commissioned in 1806 by Napoleon to commemorate his victories in battle, is the largest triumphal arch in the world. It sits in the center of the “Place de l’Etoile” or “Star”, at the western end of the Champs Elysées. To reach it, you go through the underground passageway. DO NOT cross the street, you literally risk death. The construction was completed in 1836, and in 1840 Napoleon’s remains passed under the arch on their way to the Hôtel des Invalides. It is now the site of the tomb of the Unknown Soldier from WWI, and an eternal flame burns in his honor.
The monument itself is covered with sculptures depicting Napoleon’s victories, and there are names of the hundreds of generals who commanded his troops.
For a fee, you can take an elevator or take the stairs to get to the top of the arch, where a gorgeous view of Paris awaits.
